Question by Mack S: Where can I find a archive of the Wall Street Journal accessable over the internet?
need to find some stock prices in 1990 and 1992

Best answer:

Answer by William F
Not familiar with the WSJ website myself. However most newspapers like the NY Times have their archive available online. If you find that you have to subscribe, and don’t feel like paying the price, you might consider going to a library. If your local public library does not subscribe to the online version they may have a hard copy bound. No university library worth its salt should not be subscribing to the WSJ archive.

An Occupy Wall Street protester calls out Russell Simmons during his speech, asking Simmons about the credit card company he created, RushCard ( www.rushcard.com ). Simmons responded saying “I don’t run shit,” which of course is a lie. He then went on to promote the Obama Administration’s “Buffett Tax Rule” Bill, saying “I’m ready to pay more taxes”; a common theme from high profile people speaking at Occupy Wall Street and the Democratic MSM talking heads covering it. Now the Occupy Wall Street protesters are campaigning for the Obama administration to “Pass the Buffett Rule on Fair Taxation.” This demand is posted on their own website. The campaigners are demanding that the US Congress pass a bill backed by the Obama administration, which is comprised of Wall Street operatives and is a creature of Wall Street. The “Buffett Tax Rule” will do virtually nothing to make the ‘filthy rich pay their share’ — it will only raise taxes for middle class Americans and middle class businesses. As the Wall Street Journal reports, “Roughly 90% of the tax filers who would pay more under Mr. Obama’s plan aren’t millionaires, and 99.99% aren’t billionaires.” It is the middle class — not Warren Buffett or Wall Street corporations — who will be most hurt by the very policies the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ crowd are calling for. Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway still owes taxes from 10 years ago. Buffet is the ultimate Wall Street insider — he is the third wealthiest person on the planet …

Question by venthanbosco: How do Hedge Funds Manipulate Stock Prices?
As we struggle to fathom why our financial markets have fallen so dramatically, many in the financial media have ignored the role played by short sellers and manipulators. When men controlling billions of dollars in trading power make a bet, they will go to any lengths to make that bet pay off – including manipulation and gaming our system.

Methods Used To Manipulate Our Markets –

Establish short positions over a period of 20 – 30 days – at this stage the selling is done gently – the markets do not even feel a ripple. Once that is done, wait for a trigger to crush the price down. Any trigger will do – floods in Chile , hurricane in Cuba , bomb blast in Afghanistan . The deliberate heavy selling is now done by different funds and entities allied with the short betters. A lot of the selling and buying thus happens between allied parties – something called CIRCULAR TRADING. Circular trading though illegal is hard to trace and the SEC has made no efforts to trace it.

By beating down the market heavily, they force those who had bought the shares on margin to be squeezed. Resulting margin calls from brokers will force many to sell at a low price – loosing tons of money. Stock analysts allied with the team play a major role in putting a spin to justify the manipulation

RIMM – profit up 75% – stock down 27% in a single day

POT – profit up 300% – stock down 50% over the last 3 months

From the above it’s easy to see how our financial system, our government, our regulatory authorities are turning a blind eye to the whole system being manipulated.

We only have to take a comparative look at stocks that have short selling banned and those allowed – to make a clear case that short sellers manipulate our stock markets.

Bank of America (BAC) – up 60% after the shortselling ban

CITIBANK (C) – up 40% after the shortselling ban

First Bancorp(FBP) – up 45% after the shortselling ban

Shortselling permitted stocks-

Potash (POT) – down – 50%

Apple (AAPL) – down – 30%

United States Steel(X) – down 45%

Indian stock market has plunged almost 40% since short selling for major institutions was allowed. [Just a few days before presenting the Budget, finance minister P Chidambaram has finally given the go ahead to short selling by institutional investors by clearing issues on its taxation. - http://www.financialexpress.com/news/Nod-to-short-selling-by-institutional-investors/277414/ ]

Compare the drop in stock markets -
Thursday 18, October – major stock markets down 8- 9 %
Chinese Shanghai Index down 3% (They dont allow short selling)

The major debate has been how big a role short sellers play in a market’s decline? When a stock falls by 27$ in a single day – how much of that fall can be attributed to short sellers? Hard to say. Same was the problem we faced when elephants and wildlife was being decimated around the globe. How do you prove the ivory tusk you just bought came from a dead elephant or an elephant that was just killed? In our wisdom we humans decided to ban the ivory and wildlife trade completely.

[ HYDERABAD : The volatile Sensex has found its victims here in a macabre way. K Upender, 34, killed himself and took along with him his wife Swati and two-year-old son Sai Ashij. The huge losses in the stocks business was too much for him to bear.- http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Hyderabad/Bear_run_pushes_family_to_suicide/articleshow/3501114.cms]

Huge and sudden market declines have caused people to take their own lives along with whole families. When we are dealing with an issue this serious, it is imperative that we ban an activity that contributes significantly to this major problem

Short selling originated at a time when brokers ran their own stock exchanges in the wild west style, before there was any regulation. It is as vital to the economy as is a piece of rusted nail on the road that can blow a hole in your tire.

My question is – why would the people in power allow this? Is it because the hedge funds contribute few hundred million dollars to political parties every year?

We'd be much better off with a simulator. We have no such lab for our financial markets. This strikes me as a little off. People on Wall St think about simulation, but not for catastrophe prediction, just for their own trading purposes. …

Current Stock Market Prices

Question by : How Stock Market Prices Are Determined?
Hi,
I have a senior project about this topic (Virtual Stock Market Trading Game). So, I have been searching the answer of this question.

What i am wondering is the technical information of determining stock prices. I have a list of buy and sell orders. Each order includes a quantity and a limit price(if it is not current market price). I don’t know the technical details of what happens at the background. How the trade execution performs?

Please help, thank you…
I know about bid and ask prices. What I do not know is how stock prices are determined with these bid-ask prices. And I need details.

For example,
Let’s say the market price is $ 50 per share for XYZ

Bids
person1 wants to buy 100 shares with the bid price $ 48
person2 wants to buy 80 shares with the bid price $ 49
person3 wants to buy 50 shares with the bid price $ 47

Asks
person4 wants to sell 150 shares with the ask price $ 51
person5 wants to sell 100 shares with the ask price $ 53

What will be the new stock market price for XYZ after the trade execution performs, why? Also when these pending orders will be completed?

thanks…

Best answer:

Answer by b2fnow
Econ 101. Price is determined by supply and demand.

If you are looking at the bid/ask quotes, these are generally orders put there by market makers and floor traders and subsequent institutions that “make” the market. If there were no market, there would be no trades. So the function of the market makers is to buy or sell however many shares you and everyone else wants to buy/sell, and/or match each of us up with another.
.
Some people are trying to get long at support and some are trying to get short at resistance, so they put in their limit orders at a certain price, and you see their orders at a certain level. Some people have stop loss orders, etc. Whatever the reason, lots of people want to get in, and others are wanting to get out at a certain price. Market orders execute immediately, so you don’t see those, or only momentarily.

Here’s a good reference for finance terms and definitions

http://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/06/stockpriceandearnings.asp

Addendum:
The new stock price will be whatever the next trade is.

Whenever someone caves in, and is willing to sell at the bid, or willing to buy at the ask.

Equity Market

Question by : Why is inflation positive for the equity/stock market?
I hear people saying how QE2/inflation is good, at least in the short-term, for the equity market. Why?

Best answer:

Answer by MVD34
QE2 and inflation are not the same thing.

In general, QE2 is an attempt by the FED to do one to three things (depending on who is talking and why): Stabilize the financial marketplace, lower interest rates, and/or spark economic growth by restarting an asset growth model/bubble.

That last bit is obviously the stock market and very good for stock prices in the short terms. Lower interest rates and stable financial markets also have a long history of being good for stock prices.

In industry speak: Cheap money drives demand to risk. In the language of regular folks, if I can borrow at 0.25% and lend at 5% I have a profitable business. If I can borrow at 0.25% and make 25% in the stock market, you have a money making machine.

Stock Market Activity

Question by vee mac: Why do we care about stock market activity?
Why is the stock market important and how do we know when to invest in and cash out our stocks? also what influences stock market prices?

Best answer:

Answer by Troy M
For most people, this would be the right time to buy stocks as most stocks are down and can be purchased for very less. You cash out when you are satisfied with the growth of your investment or when the stock starts declining. The reason why people lose money on their investment is because they become too optimistic. For example you bought a stock for $ 10 a piece. The stock appreciated in X number of months or years and is valued at $ 100 and then it starts declining to $ 90, $ 80, $ 70 ….. This would be the time you sell it instead of waiting for it go back to the $ 100 mark again (it may go up again but it is also possible that it may be back to $ 10 mark).

For ordinary people, discipline and keeping greed in check is very important when investing in stocks

But if you just want become an INVESTOR then none of the above applies because a real INVESTOR makes money when the market is doing good, makes money when the market is going down. You will figure out tens even hundreds of ways to make money in stock market.

Keep in mind that the real ways of making money in the stock markets or investing/trading is never revealed. Ordinary people are always advised to open up savings account at a bank or a CD that promises to pay 0.000000001% on their money. You will also see Articles on major internet destinations where the “Experts” advise to start saving early in life so you can have quarter million by the time you retire (thanks to compound interest)

Also when ordinary people start discovering good money making ways, government steps in for some reason and put certain restrictions in place, taking away the opportunity from most ordinary people for ever.

For example: Day Trading, you need 25K in your account before you can day trade.

Stock Market Explained

Question by blaq2handle: Can anyone thoroughly explain the Stock Market to me? What does it mean when stocks are low?
All i know is that in 1929 the stock market crashed but what does that mean? In school they never really explained it to me. Can you explain it to me like a fifth grader because I really don’t understand it.

Best answer:

Answer by karenchii
Crash just means the stocks went down in price. Stocks represent how much companies are worth. So before the crash, one share of Disney or whatever might be worth $ 100, then after the crash it may be worth less, like $ 80 a share. This is perfectly fine if you didn’t buy Disney stock when it was at $ 100 a share. But if you had 1 share of stock before the crash, then you had $ 100 invested in the stock market. After the crash, you only have $ 80 so you just lost $ 20. That’s why crashes are bad. However, if you only buy stock AFTER the crash, when prices are lower than before, then it’s a good thing for you because then you would buy it at a low price and then the prices would go up and you would make money.

However, stock market crashes affect more than just people that own stock. The economy does badly too, so your parents might lose their jobs or get paid less or not get a raise.

We just had a crash from the Dow Jones Industrial Average at 14,000 to like 6,500. The Dow Jones is just a term people use that averages how the 30 most important companies are doing in the country. So on average, most people in the stock market would have lost about 50% of that money.

Stocks are “low” when share prices used to be worth more, and people that owned stocks when their share prices were higher have lost money.

This is the stock chart of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. As you can see on the graph, where we are right now – the point furthest to the right – seems low compared to the rest of the graph and the general up trend. Select “Max” underneath the graph if the timeline is for the day or a few months or something. You can also see around 1929 how the graph goes sharply down. That’s the 1929 crash.

Stock Market Symbol

Article by John Howell

We’ve all seen that line of letters and symbols stream across the bottom of our screens during the nightly news. It’s the stock ticker and it shows stock market symbols and other information that not only affects businesses in the United States, but all over the world.

Even if you’re not an investor, learning to read and understand stock market symbols through the daily stock ticker will be an eye-opening experience. And if you do plan on investing someday (everyone should!), reading the stock ticker is the most basic place to start.

First, it’s important to understand what all those little stock market symbols mean. Consisting of no more than three capital letters, New York Stock Exchange stock market symbols are basically shorthand for a company name.

A company may choose their own letters but they can’t choose ones that are already in use. So they typically try to pick something that sounds like their brand name, such as Exxon which uses XON, or their most popular product, like Anheiser Busch which uses BUD.

Next, the numbers that appear after the stock market symbols are stock numbers. These represent the number of shares traded. Stock numbers are also abbreviated and will show a letter after each number that represents either K for thousand, M for million, or B for billion. Therefore, 15K represents 15,000. The second number you see after the stock number is the final bid price. So if it’s showing 45.60%, that means the final bid was .60 per share.

The arrows you see after the stock market symbols and stock prices represent trending. If the arrow is pointing up, that means the stock is rising, which means the bid price is now higher than the stock’s previous bid price. The reverse will be true if the arrow is pointing down. Instead of an arrow, you might also see a plus or minus sign. In that case, plus is up and minus is down.

Sometimes television networks will also use color to help viewers understand which way a stock is trending. Blue or white letters indicate a stock’s price hasn’t changed since yesterday’s market close. And while red indicates a stock price has fallen, green means it’s on the rise.

Finally – here’s a bit of trivia for you — we call it a stock “ticker” because in the early 20th century a machine that made a distinctive ticking sound would print out the day’s stock prices.
