Question by : How does knowing the direction of the stock market help you at all?
Let’s say the direction if the S&P 500 is moving upwards. So what? Does that mean it’s a good sign to buy a stock?

But aren’t stocks all affected by individual factors; like maybe one stock is getting sued and that stock is going to drop. Even if you know the direction of the stock market, the stocks themselves are subject to a bunch of factors. So how does knowing the direction of any stock market, DOW, Nasdaq S&P help you at all?

Best answer:

Answer by Jim Z
You are right, each stock is an individual and needs to be analysed either technically or fundamentally or both depending on your investment strategy. The answer isn’t as simple as you make it sound. Sectors are important, even though you have a stock when the market is trending up, you could be in a sector that is bearish. MOST stocks flow with the market, if the market is trending down, most stocks get swept down with the market, especially in major corrections. Same with a major rally, most stocks get swept up with the rally. When the market tumbles, there are generally more sellers than buyers, likewise, when the market is strong, there a a lot of buyers, and they automatically drive your stock up.

Stock Market Astrology

We have seen that the primary trend is always interrupted by secondary
trends and a bust can happen in a primary booming market. Most
deceptive is the secondary reaction ! Investors shiver when such a
secondary reaction happens. Many panic and sell off their entire
holdings. It is difficult to identify this secondary trend because one does
not know whether it is the beginning of a primary bear market or a
secondary reaction. Intuition alone can identify secondary trends. The
foremost amongst the intuitive sciences, Astrology, here comes to our
rescue.

The investor population in India did panic when the Sensex slid from 20400
to 18000. Normally a secondary reaction lasts from 3 weeks to 3 months. The
market recovered only after 3 weeks. Many panicked and thought that this
signalled a bear phase. It was disproved only after 3 weeks when the market
surpassed 20000 !

We have declared that Intuition alone can determine trends. Amongst the
Scientia Intuitiva, the foremost science Astrology can definitely determine
primary, secondary and tertiary trends. That Jupiter’s transit of the second
can fuel an economic boom was known to the sages. ” Nana Dukham Vitha
Samriddhi ” – thus runs an aphorism, meaning that Jupiter’s transit of the
second can trigger a stock market boom, if the stock market can indeed be
taken as a barometer of the economy !

We will define secondary reactions which are a bull decline in a Bull Phase
and a bear rally in a Bear Phase.

Secondary Reactions

Nelson remarks that ” A secondary reaction is considered to be an important
decline in a bull market or advance in a bear market usually lasting from 3
weeks to 3 months during which intervals the price movement generally
retraces from 33 percent to 66 percent of the primary Price change since the
termination of the last preceding secondary reaction. The reactions are
frequently erroneously assumed to represent a change of primary trend,
because obviously the first stage of the bull market must always coincide
with a movement which might have proved to have been nearly a secondary
reaction in a bear market, the contrary being proved after the peak has been
attained in a bull market. ” ( The ABC of Stock Speculation ).

While theoretically it is easy to talk about primary trends and secondary
reactions, practically it is difficult for an invester who has invested all
his savings in an unpredictable market. The investor’s normal reaction to a
decline is to panic. Suppose you buy Reliance for 2800. After 2 days
Reliance becomes 2780 ! What will you do ? You panic thinking that a bear
phase has started and will sell the scrip at a loss. Then later, say after 3
weeks Reliance starts its climb and becomes 3000 ! So the investor needs
guidance from technical and fundamental experts. But can Fundamental
Analysis and Technical Analysis guide him ? If FA and TA could guide
millions, we wont have so many losers ! This indicates the scope for another
analyst – The Stock Market Astrology expert – who alone can determine
trends based on the intuitive sciences !

Now a secondary reaction is taking place and the Sensex had slid down to
4700 levels. 4930 meant an overbought situtation and a correction had to
occur. You can either hold on to your portfolio ( as this is merely a
secondary reaction in a primary upward market ) or sell off and enter when
the Sensex is 300/400 points down. There is no need to panic as this
reaction is secondary and not primary.

Even though we are confronted with a Bull Market now, we will deal with a
Bear Market which will come after some time as the Market is cyclical.

The Primary Bear Market

According to Nelson ” A primary bear market is a long downward movement
interrupted by important rallies. It is caused by various economic ills and
does not terminate until the stock prices have thoroughly discounted the
worst that is apt to occur. ” ( The ABC of Stock Speculation ).
When we take a graph and when we find falling resistance ( high ) and
support ( low ) levels, we can deduce the primary trend as a Bear Phase.
When we see secondary rallies known as bear rallies, we can identify the
secondary trend as rallies in the primary bear market .Tertiary trends are
unimportant.
Nelson categorically states that ” a primary downward market is
characterised by a) extinguishment of all hopes upon which the stocks were
purchased at inflated prices b) selling due to decreased business and
earnings c) distress selling of sound securities, ragardless of their
value, by those who must find a cash market for at least a portion of their
assets.”

When the Sensex slid from 6151 in 2001 to 2900 at the beginning of 2003, it
signalled a Bear Phase. There were many rallies but they were all secondary
rallies in a primary falling market. Stock markets are cyclical and he who
knows about the cyclical nature of the stock market grieves no more !

Tertiary Trends – Daily Fluctuations

Nelson averrs that ” the third and usually unimportant, movement is the
daily fluctuation. Nevertheless, the day to day pattern must be studied
because they nearly always develop into a pattern easily recognised and
having a forecasting value.” ( The ABC of Stock Speculation )

Relation of Volume to Price Movements

Says Nelson ” the market, which is in an overbought state, becomes dull on
rallies and develops activity ( read as volume ) on declines. Conversely,
when the market is in an oversold condition, the tendency is to become dull
on declines and active on rallies. Bull markets terminate in a period of
excessive activity and begin with comparitively light transactions. ” ( The
ABC of Stock Speculation )

Manipulation

“Manipulation is possible in the daily movements and secondary reactions are
subject to such an influence to a more limited degree, but the primary trend
can never be manipulated”. ( The ABC of Stock Speculation ).

The primary trend is caused by a variety of economic factors and is not
manipulated although there were some manipulations in the tertiary and
secondary movements.

There can be corrections. We have to understand that they are mere secondary
corrections in a primary bull market. Patience alone can win the game for us
! He who exhibits one man’s intelligence and six men’s patience alone can
win !

Question by rjm546: what is the best stock market blog?
There are so many out there, is there one that I can get hooked on and learn about the market?

Best answer:

Answer by drmark27
Don’t rely on blogs–most people who blog have something to sell, which you will find out sooner or later once you start trying to trade like they do.

Start with a basic book like _Dummies Guide to Stock Market Investing_ and go from there. It will take many years, lots of reading, and a great deal of paper trading before you start to consistently make money in the markets. Don’t fall for claims of 2%+ per month either–it’s just not going to happen over the long-term.

Stock Market Close

Question by q4norm.answ3rs: Predicting how the stock market will close, at 3:30pm eastern time on the same day – can you help?
If I buy stocks online before 4pm EST, I buy the stocks closing price for that day. If its after 4pm, i buy the stocks closing price on the next day.

So, if my stocks are set up to closely mirror the overall performance of the stock market, will looking at the numbers at 3:58 pm be a good indicator of how the stock market will close that day?

And are there any good places to check to see if a last minue rally is occurring or might occur?

thanks everyone!!!
@garrisonbight:

Yeah, I don’t think I communicated my question very well. I’m not talking about what will happen in the next day, but what will happen in the next 15-30 minutes.

Also I’m not playing in the stock market, but rather am interested in long term investment – I’d still like to buy on days when the stock market decreases rather than increases, though. Thus this question.

Also, when I listen to financial reports, its very common to hear “the stock market surged/slumped today on news that xyz happened” – which suggests that if you hear the same relevant news, as –soon– as it breaks, you can react accordingly.

@The Shepherd: this is direct quote from an email from an advisr:

“When you purchase mutual fund shares before 4:00pm Eastern time, you will receive the share price for the close of that day”

yes you’re right, I’m asking about mutual funds and not stocks. Thou the mutual fund I’m interested in is invstd in stocks that closely mirror the s&p

thx!

Best answer:

Answer by garrisonbight
If your questions suggests your level of knowledge of the Stock Market, the you should probably not be playing in the market…

Obviously, you don’t understand that a LOT can happen overnight, once the market moves on to asia and on around the world… It is entirely possible to be in positive territory at the close of the U.S. market and down a hundred points when it open the next day..

AND THERE IS NO WEB SITE THAT WILL TELL YOU WHAT TO DO… if you can’t figure it out… then you shouldn’t be playing in the market…. PERIOD.

Description: www.tradethemarkets.com Story of Retracements In the free video, I talked about today’s intraday price action. At the open I was bearish; it took me awhile to figure out the market was trying to turn. The market is in retracement mode. The 30 year made a big move to the downside. Many floor traders are betting the big move is done. I do not totally agree, as I think we have the potential to test 134. I think we could get one more spike to 145. A lot of this will be driven by the Dollar index, which continues to go lower. 30 year bonds will follow the dollar lower. If the dollar closes the week on its lows, the door is open for a quick move to 76. If we move back above 77, the stock market goes lower. I still believe the danger in the stock market lies to the upside. I do not want to be overnight short this market. Today we got as low as 1185 in the S&P, and then the bulls came in. Afterhours, with Google up big, the S&P is up only . What happens tomorrow? I think it is a fight. Bulls are shooting for 1220 to begin a new short covering rally. Bears are aiming for 1170 to recoup losses. The market is overextended and the logical move is to the downside. But the market is seldom rational. Nasdaq is slamming against a double top resistance, a good place for it to come down. Even with Google up big, the Nasdaq is up only 0.21% afterhours. This market has been the story of retracements. All are sitting at key resistance levels. The big question is will we get one …

twitter.com A few thoughts on Occupy Wall Street, I’ve been watching it and going down there for a while now but hadn’t had a chance to speak on it. By the way when I say some news media people are “ringers,” I don’t necessarily mean that they deliberately obfuscate, or get orders from some shadowy figure to do so. I think they’ll often just have a personal investment in the system and status quo that’s being critiqued/threatened, so they’ll naturally–without any need to conspire–have their perception skewed by an instinct to protect the status quo they’re invested in. So though it’s quite possibly not their intention to play the ringer, it’s the function they wind up serving nonetheless. “Rainbow in the Dark” instrumental provided by Das Racist:
All of which suggest that this is all a game, which is annoying. If Zuccotti Park began to resemble a sleep-away camp, today's Day of Action, at least on Wall Street, resembled a massive game of whack-a-mole with the cops. Fun, but not serious. …

Question by roshansherigar2000: What are delivery and non-delivery trades in stock market terminology?
What are delivery and non-delivery trades in stock market terminology?
And how do they affect online trading?

Best answer:

Answer by Serge M
Your question is imprecise. You probably mean trades in which the stock certificate is delivered to the buyer, versus trades in which the stock certificate is kept in street name, that is, held by the broker with whom you have your trading account.

Most investors in stocks do not take delivery of their shares. Instead they keep their shares with the brokerage firm and receive a monthly statement of their account. The broker collects any dividends paid by the shares and credits them to the owner’s account. When the investor wants to sell shares, there is no need to go through the complicated process of endorsing them, guaranteeing the endorsement and delivering them safely to the broker. Typically, on-line trading is not accomplished with delivery of shares. It would be a waste of time and would involve a high cost.

There will be no market correction but there will be a slight pull back in the stock market. This is because of two things. First the summer is over and September is always the worst month for stocks around the world. The second reason for the pull back is valuation based.

Just as the recession was overdone and stocks became largely undervalued after this rally stocks are largely overvalued at this point. I believe momentum and lack of bad news is going to keep the bull trend running into the fall. There is also the affect of the new short selling regulations. These regulation make it harder to short stocks especially if they jump up unexpectedly. This creates a larger than normal short squeeze from all the people that believed there would be a large market correction. (My article a few days ago expressed why I said there would deffinitely NOT be a large correction in the market and it can be read here).

Although the short squeeze and overall confidence will carry the market in a bullish direction this fall will be a great time to get into the market. The month of September is a rally killer. Overall it has been the worst month for stocks not only in th United States but around the world. The chart below shows the S&P 500 over both an 18 year and 15 year time spans. Looking at September there is always a severe pull back in stock prices.

Because of the seasonal affect in combination with the overpricing of stocks that is currently occuring there will be a decent sized pull back this fall allowing more bulls to pile into the market. Over the next two years I am very bullish for the overal market especially the NASDAQ. But as rallys carry stock prices higher than the companies valuation and intrinsic values says are appropriate this almost gurantees that stock prices will drop. So get ready for perhaps a 5-10% pull back through the fall but at that point do not expect another collapse. This drawack is merealy a great chance to buy!
