Asian Stock Markets Today

Article by Abeniel Huten

The Indian stock market today is actually comprised of two key entities and more than 20 Stock markets. These two principal entities are the Bombay Stock Exchange Limited and National Stock Exchange of India Limited. There is an interesting story about the two markets where it originated. During the 1850s, the stock market for the first time in India was established when the East India Company established and developed a “community” of brokers.

In 1860, there were 60 members for stockbrokerage. From 1874, the results of an industry trade share rapidly expanding and these stockbrokers met regularly (is now known as Dalal Street) in order to carry out their business. Brokers began to gather in front of the Town Hall of Mumbai, conducting the meeting under the Banyan tree, and the Indian stock market was born.

Although in reality there are over 20 different stock exchanges in India today, but the two are most powerful as mentioned above. The Bombay Stock Exchange Limited often referred to as the BSE, was originally established in 1875. Interestingly, it is the oldest market across the Asian continent has been running since the beginning. Today there are over 4,700 companies listed on the BSE, and more than 7,700 scripts bag.

The National Stock Exchange of India Limited, or NSE as it is called, is an Indian stock market based in the city of Mumbai and was originally established only 18 years ago in 1992. In that short period of time, has grown to about 1, 600 companies listed and has a current market capitalization of Rs. 47, 01,923 (Wikipedia). It was predicted that the NSE would be the largest stock exchange in India, where it is considered the market capitalization in the end of 2009.

Until the 1980s there was no way to measure or scale of the ups and downs in the value of the shares. However, in 1986, BSE Sensex implemented, which was a stock market index. Three years later, India identified the launch of BSE National Index. It was renamed as BSE-100 Index in October 1996 and consisting of 100 different shares with India’s five major stock market exchanges. These five markets were Ahmadabad, Calcutta, Delhi, Madras and Bombay. In addition, the dollar-linked version of BSE-100 was launched in May 2006.

Many banks, financial intermediaries, insurance companies, and major financial institutions owns the NSE mutually. However, management and ownership are completely separate entities. Interestingly, two of the NSE foreign investors have taken a serious stand on the NSE – Goldman Sachs and NYSE Euronext.

Differences between the BSE and the NSE

The difference between BSE and NSE is that the former is not automated, however, although progress is being made to achieve full automation, while the second is a fully automated Stock Exchange with electronic processing of market orders. There are more than 2,000 shares is now with the NSE, while more than 4,700 have been listed with BSE.

The markets are lower today as commodities are collapsing. Oil, gold and silver are all taking a massive dive as the Dollar is higher. This is the main driving force behind the losses today. In fact, the usual culprit to the drop, the financial stocks, are actually doing very well. This must be watched closely. When the bank stocks start to lead, a rally is usually not far behind. First Solar is taking a big hit today but has finally filled a master gap fill at .00. In addition, more negative comments on GMCR have taken it down sharply.
Answer by Empress Jan
I’m no expert, but try Wells Fargo (WFC). With the fires in S.Ca, they will need loans to do rebuilding and WFC is strong in that area. The company is 150 yrs old +, and I’m a Bus Mgmt major; am doing a report on the company right now. It’s just a gut feeling.

Question by zxdfmlp: Is there a web site that offers free market quotes for single stock futures from One Chicago?
Even 20 minute delayed quotes?

Best answer:

Answer by popeleo5th
Delayed quotes are available all over the web, although reuters.com and bloomberg.com are the biggest providers.

The reason you can’t find anything more recent is that Exchanges charge high prices for up to the second trading data. Sometimes the price paid depends on the number of end users and it is also usual these days for the exchanges to force intermediaries to make you agree to their contract terms before making the data available. So if you do decide to pay for access you will find you have to click through pages of contracts from 5 or 6 exchanges and agree to their terms before the service is switched on.

Question by Kevin S: Stock Market: Trading System Users: What can you tell me?
I just have a few basic questions.

Did you buy one or construct your own?
What kind of percentage returns do you get, and what is your time frame?
How much maintenance is involved?
What software system, platform, or site did you use?
Does it matter which broker you use to execute automatic trades?
What market do you trade on?
Would you recommend others to do it?

World Stock Market Indices

Question by arjking: What is the weighting of the world stock market by country/region?
If I own a total US stock market index fund like VTSMX and an international index fund like VGTSX wanted my portfolio to mimic the performance of the world stock market, what weighting would I use? What is an inexpensive way to hedge the currency risk of owning an international fund?
Thank you, that is exactly what I wanted to know. I would also be very interested in finding out what is the real ROR on such a portfolio but I am not sure what to do since these international index funds are relatively new.

Best answer:

Answer by muncie birder
By market capitalization one figure that I read has the U S markets at about 36%. How accurate that is I am not certain. I believe that figure is based on the Russell Global index. Here is the source.

http://etf.seekingalpha.com/article/38252

I do have a problem with investing based on market capitalization. I do not know if you recall but at one time the market cap of the Japanese stock market was greater than that of the U S stock market. Following that event the Japanese stock market proceeded on a ten year decline. So in my opinion investing based on market cap is not really a sound financial strategy. I believe a more viable strategy is to invest based on a more diversified approach. In fact I do not like investing based on market cap and investing in index funds that are based on market cap in my opinion is not the wisest of investment strategies taken by themselves. It is ok certainly to invest in index funds but with the realization that there is capitalization risk involved that should be taken into account.

Currency risk of owning international fund? For the last several years the currency risk has resulted from owning U S stock funds not international stock funds. That of course may change but based on U S government policies, I would not bet on it.

But to answer your question, I do not know of a way to do a currency hedge that will protect you against fluctuations in the relative values of your foreign holdings.

It now trades at over The terms “penny stocks” and “micro cap stocks” can be used interchangeably. Technically, micro cap stocks are classified and based on their market capitalization or market-cap, while penny stocks are looked at in terms of their price. Definitions vary, but in general a stock with a market capitalization between and 0 million is a micro cap. (Less than million is nano-cap) According to the Securities and Exchange Commission, any stock under is a penny stock. Others consider only those stocks trading at less than to be a penny stock.
Question by C C: What is the best way to buy stock, Market order or Limit Order ?
I plan to buy stock online, but want to know which way is the best?
Market order or Limit Order ? What are the difference?

Thank !

Limit order: you put restrictions on how high to bid or sell for a stock.

Limit orders cost more but can keep you from paying too much. A limit order may not get filled because the stock may not fit the limits you place on it.

Market orders should almost always get filled but you can easily pay a lot more than you anticipated because or market fluctuation.
