Question by Crayola: C++: How would I go about reading in Stock Market Data?
I am curious where I could read Stock Market Data from to use in my program. Preferrably from a source that would allow me to sell the finished software, and preferrably as close to real-time as possible (i know Real Time would cost money, but a 15-20 minute delay would be fine). Also, how would i go about implementing it?

There are many many formats. My favorite is MetaStock, which is a CSV file that goes like

(spaces inserted for yahoo formatting)

which of course reads in C++ like any other CSV: either by using comma as whitespace or by calling getline(line, token, ‘,’) or by using boost.tokenizer or boost.split or even boost.spirit although that’s a bit of an overkill.

although when trading in real life, I used my broker’s API, where data came from the API function calls, already parsed and verified.

For something totally generic, I would go with ticker, time interval, open, high, low, close, volume – you’ll be able to convert anything else into that.

Oh, and when you go true real-time, your data flow will change: instead of high/low/open/close you will be getting a data packet for each trade, but that’s a whole different story.
